lip types

Contrary to the information that you will find online about lip types and what they say about you, lips aren’t defined by personality types, just like any other part of the body. Instead, the shape of your lips is genetic.

Everyone is different – you can have a round face, an oval face, blue eyes, brown eyes… it’s just the way we are born. Lips, like any other part of the body come in all shapes and sizes. We take a look at the different shapes and lip types, how to take care of your lips and how you can make a difference to how they look.

Lips are Just as Unique as Fingerprints

It’s true, so much so that your lips can be used for identification, just like fingerprints. You can see your lip print by putting on lipstick and blotting on some tissue. There is a whole science behind it called ‘cheiloscopy’, which is actually derived from the Greek word for lips.

Lip Types Can be Classified in Different Ways

Shape

First of all, they are classed by shape – plump, round, thin, heart-shaped. There are many different variations on lip types the most common detailed in this chart below:

Lip Print

We mentioned above that lip prints are like fingerprints. It’s true, in fact, there are 5 different pattern types which are as follows:

Different cultures prefer different types of lips and find them attractive for various reasons. Fashion largely dictates how we like our lips, especially in the Western world. For many, bigger is better. A plumper, rounder, more voluminous lip is the look that many people, both men and women, are currently seeking.

Type 1 – the lines of the lips are vertical and run across the entire lip or part of the lip

Type 2 – the lines are branched or y-shaped

Type 3 – crossed lines that intersect

Type 4 – reticular lines

Type 5 – undetermined lines

Taking care of your lips

Hydration

As your lips are subjected to UV rays from the sun and the Great British weather elements, they will become dry in summer and chapped in winter. It’s critical to make sure that you are using the right product for your lips. Often, we are sold these amazing images of juicy looking lips using the latest expensive products which, in reality, will dry out your lips even further.

It doesn’t have to cost a fortune to take care of your lips on a day to day basis. Use simple products such as Vaseline, cocoa butter, coconut oil or aloe Vera. You can use these products before you apply your lipstick or lip gloss – it will prevent these products drying out your lips. You can also exfoliate your lips with a gentle scrub and follow this with a moisturiser.

Enhancing Your lips

With age, our lips can lose their volume and they can start to get thinner. You may also have thin lips either top or bottom or both. Our lips are a key feature of our face – they are what frames our smile and can affect our confidence. There are products such as lipsticks which claim to give volume to your lips but if you really want to get more volume then non-surgical lip enhancements are an excellent way to get the look you are seeking

Lip Fillers

Using the relevant dose of lip fillers to suit you and your requirements, you can have the top, bottom or both lips injected to add volume. The procedure is quick, easy and the results last for months, they are also instant, in fact, you will leave the salon feeling better than when you came in.
